Buttoned Swatches/Mask Buddies

This is a quick easy crochet project that’s great practice for beginners. I spent lots of time looking at other mask buddy/ear protector patterns and they all involved working in the round. I like working in the round for circles and squares but I don’t really enjoy ovals. I decided the easiest and neatest option was to make simple fabric swatches and add buttons.
You will need:
~ 100% cotton yarn, DK or 8/8. I’ve used hobbii Rainbow in Dark Blue Jeans 50g and one ball has generously made 12 swatches. Keep some yarn aside to fray apart and use to sew on the buttons.
~ 4.5 mm crochet hook.
~Darning needle.
~Sewing needle.
~Sewing scissors.
~Buttons.
If you are using the crochet chart start in the bottom left corner.
Chain 18 or until your chain is just longer than 10cm, then chain 2 more.
Row 1: Skip the first 2 chains from hook and double crochet in each chain. Chain 2 and turn work. (18 stitches)
Row 2: Chain 2 does not count as a stitch. Double crochet into each stitch. Chain 2 and turn work. (18 stitches)
Row 3: Chain 2 does not count as a stitch. Double crochet into each stitch. Fasten off work and block if desired. (18 stitches)
Chain 18 or until your chain is just longer than 10cm, then chain 2 more.
Row 1: Skip the first 2 chains from hook and treble crochet in each chain. Chain 2 and turn work. (18 stitches)
Row 2: Chain 2 does not count as a stitch. Treble crochet into each stitch. Chain 2 and turn work. (18 stitches)
Row 3: Chain 2 does not count as a stitch. Treble crochet into each stitch. Fasten off work and block if desired. (18 stitches)
Sew in the crochet ends with the darning needle. Measure the buttons about 10 cm apart from each other and sew on with the frayed yarn.
Let me know if you make any!
Happy Crocheting,
Sam 💛
